This summer, urban youth will have a chance to enjoy a wide variety of activities designed especially to enhance their Fair experiences at the Wisconsin State Fair Day Camp. Sign-up is underway now for Milwaukee area youth interested in attending this unique camp experience. The 2008 Wisconsin State Fair, presented by U.S. Cellular, will take place July 31 through August 10.

State Fair Day Camp activities will include:
  • Farm animal care demonstrations and exploration
  • Visiting the DNR Park with hands-on workshops
  • House of Moo activities
  • A taste of Wisconsin agricultural products
  • A trip to the Discovery Barnyard
  • A Ride down the Giant Slide
  • T-shirt printing
  • Many more hands-on experiences and activities

“The camp was designed to teach urban youth about the importance of Wisconsin agriculture and natural resources, including food and fiber products, animals, and renewable energy, said Brian Bolan, Agriculture Director.  “It is a unique way for Milwaukee area youth to experience the Fair and learn about the thriving agricultural industry in Wisconsin" continued Bolan.

 Three Sessions to Choose From

All incoming fourth, fifth, six and seventh grade students are eligible to participate. Fair day-campers can choose from three sessions:
  • Friday, August 1, from 8 a.m. 3:30 p.m. (4th and 5th graders)
  • Tuesday, August 5, from 8 a.m. -3:30 p.m. (Advanced Camp for 6th and 7th graders and past fair camp graduates) or
  • Friday, August 8, from 8 a.m. 3:30 p.m. (4th and 5th graders).
Registration is $10.00 per camper, which includes Fair admission, lunch, a T-shirt, a backpack and camp supplies. Registration forms, health forms and fees are due by June 1, 2008. Each session is limited to 50 children.

The day camp is conducted by volunteer youth and adults from Wisconsin agricultural and service groups including FFA, 4-H and Scouts. It is co-sponsored by Wisconsin State Fair, Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board, Wisconsin State Fair ParkYouth Foundation, Wisconsin Agricultural Growth Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, and Wisconsin Women for Agriculture.
